Pula with its unique examples of classical monuments, the most imposing sight being Vespasian's amphitheatre from the 1st century AD. The Triumphal Arch of the Sergi, Temple of Augustus and Small Roman Theater date from the same classical period. The Roman Amphitheatre (commonly called Arena), from the 1st and 2nd centuries, occupies a dominant position above the harbour. It has an elliptic ground-plan (132.45 x 105.10 m), the walls are 30.45 m high; it could seat 23,000 spectators. It is the world's sixth largest preserved amphitheatre. Part of the city that dates from the 19th and beginning of 20th centuries, the time of the Austro-Hungarian rule, consists of buildings characteristic of Austrian historicism.
Rovinj is one of the most developed seaside resorts in Istria, offering a whole range of visitor opportunities in a picturesque ambience of the ancient town, surrounded by luxuriant pine forests, the coast and islands of Rovinj are set aside as a protected landscape.
Though Rovinj remains an active fishing port today, it wasn't until 1763 that it became part of the mainland. As such, its restricted access resulted in the labyrinth of narrow, cobblestoned streets you see today. Explore Old Town and marvel at the centuries-old Venetian influenced architecture as you pass under archways, through alleyways, and up stone stairwells. Navigate your way to Balbi's Arch and the Clock, above the skyline dominated by the baroque St. Euphemia Church.
One of the most renowned places is Poreč; a small town, situated on the west coast, is set in a protected harbor , with a turbulent past nearly 2,000-year-old, lying on the western side of Istrian peninsula. Of special importance is the extraordinary 6th century Byzantine Basilica of St. Euphrasius with its magnificent mosaic, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and an exceptional example of religious art and architecture.
